  • NATIONAL INSIGNIA OF SLOVENIA

    NATIONAL INSIGNIA

Slovenia has three national symbols – the coat of armsthe flag and the anthem. The coat of arms, the flag and the anthem are determined by the Constitution. Their use is determined by the law, which among other things prescribes the flying of the flag on state holidays. Slovenia joined the European Union on 1 May 2004. The use of the European Union’s flag and anthem in Slovenia is determined by the Decree on the use of the European Union's flag and anthem in the Republic of Slovenia.

    The flag

The three colours of the Spring of Nations :Slovenia's national flag is white, blue and red and bears the Slovenian cot of arms. The three-coloured flag first appeared during the Spring of Nations in 1848. The National Assembly upon the announcement of Slovenia's independence on 25 June 1991 took the decision on the design of the present flag.

    The Coat of Arms

    Combining historical elements
Slovenia’s coat of arms is in the shape of a shield. In the middle of the shield is the outline of Mount Triglav in white; beneath which are two wavy blue lines, representing the sea and the rivers and above are three gold six-pointed stars, arranged in the shape of an inverted triangle.
As on the flag, the three national colours (white, blue and red) of Carniola - the central historic state on the territory of the Slovenian people - are used. The six-pointed stars are the symbols of the Celje counts, the last great dynasty on Slovenian territory, and Mount Triglav as a symbol of Slovenehood. The coat of arms was designed by the sculptor Marko Pogačnik.

    The anthem

    The message of Zdravljica

The seventh stanza of Zdravljica (A Toast), a lengthy poem by France Prešeren (1800–1849) in used as the Slovenian national anthem. The poem was set to music decades ago by Stanko Premrl (1880–1965).

Zdravljica, a toast to all good-hearted people, was written in 1844, and in it the poet declares his belief in a free-thinking Slovenian and Slavonic political awareness, promoting the idela of a Unified Slovenia, which the March revolution in 1848 elevated into a national political programme.

Text of the Slovenian national anthem (7th stanza of Zdravljica - A Toast by France Prešeren)

    NATIONAL ANTHEM

    God’s blessing on all nations,
Who long and work for that bright day,
    When o’er earth’s habitations
    No war, no strife shall hold its sway;
    Who long to see
    That all men free
No more shall foes, but neighbours be.

    The EU motto

"United in diversity", the motto of the European Union, First came into use in 2000. It signifies how Europeans have come together, in the form of the EU, to work for peace and prosperity, while at the same time being enriched by the continent's many different cultures, traditions and languages.
You can see here in the languages of our partners countries ( exept Turkey)  this motto.

    Italian: Uniti nella diversita
    Slovak: Zjednoteni v rozmanitosti
    Slovene: Združeni v različnosti
    Spanish: Unida en la diversidad

Europe Day 9 May – EU Open Doors

Europe Day held on 9 May every year celebrates peace and unity in Europe. The date marks the anniversary of the historical 'Schuman declaration'. At a speech in Paris in 1950, Robert Schuman,  then French foreign minister, set out his idea for a new form of political cooperation in Europe, which would make war between Europe’s nations unthinkable.

His vision was to create a European institution that would pool and manage coal and steel production. A treaty creating such a body was signed just under a year later. Schuman’s proposal is considered to be the beginning of what is now the European Union.

    Open doors at EU institutions

To celebrate Europe Day, the EU institutions open their doors to the public in early May in Brussels and Strasbourg. Local EU offices in Europe and all over the world organise a variety of activities and events for all ages.
Each year thousands of people take part in visits, debates, concerts and other events to mark the day and raise awareness about the EU.

    The European flag and anthem

The European flag is the symbol not only of the European Union but also of Europe's unity and identity in a wider sense.
The European flag consists of 12 golden stars in a circle on a blue background. The stars symbolise the ideals of unity, solidarity and harmony among the peoples of Europe.

The number of stars has nothing to do with the number of member countries, though the circle is a symbol of unity.

    The European Union (anthem)

Since 1986 the EU has used the Hymn to Europe or the ‘Ode to Joy’ from the last movement of Beethoven’s 9th Symphony as a musical symbol of the EU. It was originally the Council of Europe that began to use this piece of music in 1972. Today, both the Council of Europe and the EU use the Hymn to Europe , even though they are two different organisations.
The EU anthem does not replace the national anthems of the EU countries.

Joy, beautiful sparkle of the gods,
    Daughter of Elysium!

    We enter, fire-drunk,
    Heavenly one, your shrine.

    Your magic again binds
    What custom has firmly parted.

    All men become brothers
    Where your tender wing lingers.

Whoever has had the great fortune
    To be a friend's friend,

Whoever has won a devoted wife,
    Join in our jubilation!

Indeed, whoever can call even one soul,
    His own on this earth!

And whoever was never able to, must creep
    Tearfully away from this band!

Indeed, whoever can call even one soul,
    His own on this earth!

And whoever was never able to, must creep
    Tearfully away from this band!

Joy, beautiful sparkle of the gods,
    Daughter of Elysium!

    We enter, fire-drunk,
    Heavenly one, your shrine.

    Your magic again binds
    What custom has firmly parted.

    All men become brothers
    Where your tender wing lingers.

Cultural day in school Žetale - European citizenship

    4 October 2013.

Students from 6 to 9 class had a cultural day on the topic of European citizenship.
We arranged Comenius corner, tested our knowledge of the EU through a questionnaire prepared by the school in Košice. Checked our knowledge about  Europe on the  website: KidsCorner. The event of the day was an important visit:  our second Member of European Parliament , Mrs. Tanja Fajon visit us and talk about her job in Brussles. It was very interesting.  Our knowledge of the EU is not so good so we need  to learn a lot more about our new homeland Europe.
